US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev has apologized for cracking Asian-American jokes while giving a speech before the Asian Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas on Thursday.

Reid said in a brief statement that his comments were in extremely poor taste and apologized for the same.

In one of his comments, he said "the Asian population is so productive. I don't think you're smarter than anybody else, but you have convinced a lot of us you are".

He later made another comment saying "one problem I've had today is keeping my Wongs straight".

Reid's remarks were captured on tape and posted online by America Rising, a Republican opposition research group.

His remarks have invited criticism from Asian Pacific American Advocates, who issued a statement slamming Reid for his "racist and disgusting" comments.
