Key benchmark indices languished in negative zone in mid-morning trade. At 11:19 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was down 52.40 points or 0.21% at 24,720.57. The 50-unit Nifty 50 index was currently down 19.35 points or 0.26% at 7,517.45. The Sensex fell 98.30 points or 0.39% at the day's low of 24,674.67 in mid-morning trade. The barometer index rose 139.67 points, or 0.56% at the day's high of 24,912.64 in early trade. The Nifty fell 34 points or 0.45% at the day's low of 7,502.80 in mid-morning trade. The index rose 29.70 points or 0.39% at the day's high of 7,566.50 in early trade.
The market breadth indicating the overall health of the market turned negative from positive in mid-morning trade. On BSE, 1,201 shares fell and 990 shares rose. A total of 140 shares were unchanged. The BSE Mid-Cap index was currently down 0.11%. The BSE Small-Cap index was currently down 0.18%. The decline in both these indices was lower than the Sensex's decline in percentage terms.
In overseas stock markets, Chinese stocks led decline in Asian equities after disappointing Chinese data. In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite was currently off 2.27%. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng index was currently off 1.24%. The latest data showed new yuan loans in December were well below the previous month's lending and broad M2 money supply growth also slowed.
US stock index futures pointed at losses for US stocks later in the global day. Trading in US index futures indicated that the Dow Jones Industrial Average could fall 119 points at the opening bell today, 15 January 2016. US stocks surged yesterday, 14 January 2016, as a rebound in oil prices allowed the main indexes to claw back much of the steep fall seen in the previous session.
Shares of pharmaceutical companies edged lower. Wockhardt (down 1.5%), Aurobindo Pharma (down 1.4%), Piramal Enterprises (down 0.8%), IPCA Laboratories (down 0.79%), Lupin (down 0.52%), Divi's Laboratories (down 0.37%), Cipla (down 0.31%), Strides Shasun (down 0.3%), GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals (down 0.29%), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (down 0.29%) and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (down 0.08%), edged lower. Alkem Laboratories (up 2%), Dr Reddy's Laboratories (up 0.48%) and Cadila Healthcare (up 0.84%) edged higher.
FMCG shares edged lower. Tata Global Beverages (down 1.6%), Dabur India (down 1.21%), Hindustan Unilever (down 0.93%), Godrej Consumer Products (down 0.32%), Procter & Gamble Hygiene & Health Care (down 0.28%), Nestle India (down 0.25%), Britannia Industries (down 0.13%), Bajaj Corp (down 0.04%) and GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare (down 0.02%), edged lower. Colgate Palmolive (India) (up 0.01%), Jyothy Laboratories (up 0.15%) and Marico (up 0.62%) edged higher.
