At least eight people were killed and 32 wounded in three car bomb explosions in Iraq's capital Baghdad Thursday, an interior ministry source said.

Two car bombs went off in the afternoon at a popular marketplace in Hurriyah district in the northern part of Baghdad, leaving five people dead and 12 wounded, the source told Xinhua.

A third car bomb was detonated in Talbiyah district in the eastern part of the capital, killing three people and wounding some 20 others, the source said.

The toll could rise as ambulances and civilian cars evacuated the victims to several hospitals and medical centres in the city, the source said.

Terrorism and violence have killed 5,576 civilians in Iraq in the first half of this year with 11,666 more wounded, according to a recent UN report.
