Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Sarbananda Sonowal Tuesday said gender violence and inequality were among the urgent issues that the Narendra Modi government was focussing on.
India as a nation has been fighting for gender equality, and the Modi government was laying special emphasis on dealing with gender inequality, Sonowal said at an event organised by UN Women to mark the International Day to End Violence against Women.
At the event, Indian tennis player Sania Mirza was appointed the UN Goodwill Ambassador for the South Asian region by UN Assistant Secretary-General Lakshmi Puri.
