Ahead of her visit, British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday made a telephone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during which the two leaders discussed the scope for strengthening the bilateral relationship, an official statement said.

The statement said the two Prime Ministers exchanged greetings on the occasion of the festival of Diwali, which was celebrated on Sunday.

"Both leaders agreed that there is substantial scope for further strengthening bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors, including Science & Technology, Finance, Trade & Investment, and Defence & Security," the statement said.

Prime Minister Modi said he is looking forward to welcoming Prime Minister May in India next week, which will be her first substantive bilateral visit outside Europe.

May will undertake a three-day visit to India from November 6-8, in her first bilateral visit outside Europe.
