Letters: Out for the count

With reference to your editorial “The President-maker fails” (July 19), I would say the West Bengal chief minister is clean bowled. By opposing Pranab Mukherjee’s candidature for President initially and then deciding to support him, Mamata Banerjee appears to be confused about whether she is in the ruling camp or the opposition. Her volte-face, which involves withdrawing her party’s backing for the BJP candidate, P A Sangma, is not convincing. She says she does not want to waste her votes. As a seasoned politician she must know that voting for a person depends on his or her merits. Her votes hardly matter in Mukherjee’s election. But she has finally bitten the dust after trying to browbeat the Congress. The only poor consolation is that she must pretend she is obliging the prime minister and Mukherjee.
