A couple were today sentenced to ten years imprisonment by a court here for murdering their neighbour following a quarrel over their goat straying into his compound and damaging some saplings here last year.
Additional District Judge D Kingsley Christopher, who held that the prosecution had proved the case, also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on Sasikumar and his wife Jayakodi.
According to the prosecution, Sasikumar and Jayakodi hit their neighbour Shanmugavelu with a firewood on his head on June 11, 2013 when he questioned them for allowing their sheep enter his home garden and damage saplings.
Shanmugavelu succumbed to head injuries in a hospital.
Chidambaram police registered a case and arrested Sasikumar and Jayakodi.
