Forest officials have rescued 15 tortoises kept "illegally" at Chaarbhuja temple in Udaipur on complaint of a city-based animal activist.

State in-charge of People for Animal organisation Babulal Jajoo had lodged an FIR with Udaipur police against the temple administration for "illegally" keeping tortoises.

Keeping tortoises is punishable offence and also amounts to penalty under the Wildlife Protection Act, said Jajoo in a statement demanding release of the tortoises in a jungle or any biological park.
