2 medium-intensity tremors hit Meghalaya in less than 4 min

Two medium-intensity earthquakes, both epicentred in and around state capital Shillong, hit Meghalaya today in a span of less than four minutes.

The first temblor struck at 3:16 PM at a depth of 8km. It had a magnitude of 3 on the Richter Scale.

The second tremor hit four minutes later at the same site, but the depth was 9km and its magnitude 3.2 on the Richter Scale.

"The northeast is an active seismic zone and, at times, quakes do occur in such a brief span of time," JL Gautam, Head (Operations) of the National Centre of Seismology, said in Delhi.
