38 candidates to test electoral waters in DU polls next week

According to the final picture that emerged today after withdrawals and disqualifications from the 130 nominations that were filed till Tuesday, 13 candidates are in fray for the post of president, seven are contesting for vice president and nine each are contesting for both the posts of secretary and joint secretary.

While three candidatures were cancelled due to violation of codes, a large number of withdrawals were made as different political groups finalised their candidates for different posts on the panel.

The post of president is likely to see a direct contest between NSUI's Arun Hooda, a second year student of Buddhist studies, and ABVP's Ankit Dhananjoy Chaudhary of Buddhist Studies.

 

The election is slated for September 14 following which the varsity will get its new students' union.

The DUSU elections are hotly contested and considered a matter of prestige for major political groups.

BJP's student wing ABVP has dominated the last few students' unions, with its members campaigning hard against the Congress-led state and Central governments.

Ajay Chikra, the last president of the union, was affiliated to the Congress's student wing NSUI, while all the other three posts were held by student activists of the ABVP.
