4 held for bid to smuggle Rs 90 lakh worth gold jewels

Based on intelligence gathered, Customs officers intercepted two Sri Lankan women and a man and an Indian woman who arrived at the Anna International Airport by different flights from Colombo since yesterday.

Though the passengers said they did not have any dutiable goods, searches resulted in recovery of three kg of gold jewellery of which 800 grams was pure 24 carat gold jewellery, Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, Commissioner of Customs, said in a statement.

"The passengers in their statement to Customs authorities confessed that they attempted to take the gold without declaring to Customs in order to evade customs duty", he said adding that the passengers have been arrested under the Customs Act.

 

They had kept the jewels concealed in their inner garments, airport sources said.
