As many as 49 people were taken into custody by police on charge of rioting and criminal intimidation during a 12-hour bandh today demanding establishment of an IIM in Sambalpur.
The incident took place when a coal laden truck defied the bandh call and plied on the road. A group of people detained the vehicle and attacked the driver near the City Railway Station under Dhanupali Police Station area.
However, the truck driver ran to a nearby shop for shelter. The mob set afire two shops, but no one was hurt in the incident. The truck was damaged by the mob, said Dhanupali Police Station Inspector-in Charge Sumant Barik.
Based on the FIRs filed by the two shop owners and driver, a case has been registered against the arrested people, Barik said.
