Five teachers of a private engineering college near here were today booked by police for allegedly abetting the suicide of a first year B.Tech girl student, who had "poor" academic record.

A case under IPC section 306 (abetment of suicide) has been registered against the teachers in the wake of complaints from the parents of the student who leaped to her death from the fourth floor of the college building yesterday, police said.

Parents of I Vinodhini, a first year B.Tech (Electronic and Electrical Engineering) student, suspected foul play and refused to claim the body and demanded justice.

On the basis of a complaint from the parents that the five teachers had caused mental torture to their daughter, police registered a case against them.

Activists of student outfits held demonstrations at the Pondicherry University and also at the engineering college demanding stern action against those who "mentally tortured" students.

Relatives of the student also held a demonstration at Sultanpet, the native place of the girl, demanding justice and action against the teachers.
