A five-year-old girl, who fell into a 40-feet deep borewell at Mokhla village in Rajnandgaon district of Chhattisgarh today, could not be saved despite a five-hour-long operation by a joint rescue team.
Khushboo Sahu, daughter of Harishchandra Sahu, fell into the uncovered borewell while she was playing near her house at around 3 PM, district collector Ashok Agrawal said.
The rescue operation was launched soon after Khushboo's family members informed police about the mishap.

"A team of borewell experts and doctors reached the spot and launched measures to rescue the girl who was stuck nearly 13 feet beneath the ground," Agrawal said.
While the rescuers dug a ditch adjacent to the borewell the doctors in the team supplied oxygen to the child through a pipe.
"The rescuers finally reached the girl through a tunnel in the evening," he said.
Khushboo was rushed to district hospital where doctors declared her dead.
Doctors said that the child apparently died due to lack of oxygen, but the exact cause of her death could be known after the postmortem.
