Veteran singer Hariharan tonight performed at a classical concert before the Kolkata audience and said he believed more in singing than delivering speeches.

Flanked by Ustad Rashid Khaan, the 61-year old singer said late tonight, "the ganwala can only sing but find it difficult when he is asked to say something. A musician can only speak through his soul which is not through words but Sur."

Hariharan delivered 'Yaad piyaki aaye' before a packed audience at 'Behala Classical Festival' in the city and paid tribute to Pt Ravi Shankar.

Hariharan, who had lent his soulful voice for films like Roja, Bombay and Taal with composer AR Rahman, said he did not have anything to comment on the present day Bollywood works.

"I would rather talk about my projects and concerts."

Coming to Kolkata, "Rashidji's city", he said "it is interesting that different genres of music flourish in Kolkata with a receptive audience for each strand."

"From music, to food and seating accomodaton in a concert - Bengalees are passionate about fighting," he said with a smile.

Hariharan was conferred the 'Sarvottam Samman' by the festival authorities.
