"We need uniform education system to remove disparities," Shailendra Kumar (SP) said initiating a debate on uniform education system in the country.

Kumar stressed on the need for nationalisation of education and asked government to stop its commercialisation.

He was of the view that Hindi should be made medium of instruction across the country as a first step toward the goal of having uniform education system.

Kumar asked the government to increase expenditure on education to up to 20 per cent of the total budget and to provide judicial powers of National Children Commission.

Favouring uniform education system, Meenakshi Natrajan (Cong) asked the government to draft an academic calendar as per the requirement of Indian students.

She said since India is an agriculture-based country, the government must keep harvest and sowing seasons in mind while drafting an academic calendar.

Highlighting the problem that just 7-8 per cent students reach college, she said the scheme for setting up model schools and colleges should be implemented.

She also demanded an accredition bill to improve the standard of educational education.

Echoing similar views, Sumitra Mahajan (BJP) also demanded a uniform education system with compulsory elementary education in mother-tongue only.

Others who also demanded such a system were Gorakh Nath Pandey (BSP), Saugata Roy (TMC), Jadgish Sharma (JD-U), Saidul Haque (CPI-M) and Tathagatha Satpathy (BJD).
