More than half a dozen armed robbers allegedly barged inside a house in Sikrikalan village of Modinagar and thrashed three youths there before decamping with cash and ornaments worth more than Rs one lakh, police said.

The incident occurred late last night at the house of one Rakesh who had gone to Delhi with his wife, leaving behind his two sons and a nephew who were preparing for their intermediate exams, SHO Modinagar Deepak Sharma said.

After midnight about 7-8 masked robbers entered the house by scaling the boundary wall and they thrashed and gagged the trio when they resisted and tried raising an alarm, the SHO said.

Hearing the screams, the villagers assembled near the house and fired in the air with their licensed arms to scare away the robbers, he said.

The villagers also pelted stones at the miscreants and chased them while they fled with the booty. In the ensuing melee, the robbers dropped their country-made pistols and knives, the officer said.

An FIR has been registered and robbers will be nabbed soon, he said.
