A minor girl from Assam has been rescued from Siliguri by Assam police with the help of West Bengal Police last night.

Acting on a tip off the girl hailing from Rangia Kariara village in Kamrup district was rescued in Siliguri by a police team from Rangia, a police officer said.

The West Bengal police extended support to the rescue operation.

The girl had been missing from nearby Changsari since 2014.

The girl told PTI that one woman of Changsari took her to Siliguri by train with the promise of a lucrative job.

But the woman left her at New Jalpaiguri Railway station alone and fled, the girl told the police.

Following the death of her father the girl was forced to work in an industry in Changsari where she had met that woman, believed to be part of a human trafficker gang, the officer said quoting the girl's version of events.

Seeing the girl roaming alone on the railway platform a man then had taken her to his home where she stayed for months which stretched into years, the officer said.

She somehow got an opportunity to talk over phone with her mother who informed the police here.

The police rescued the girl from the place she was staying last night and handed her over to her family after medical check up, the officer added.

Further details of the rescue operation were not available.

Police launched an operation to nab the culprits and plug the missing links of the incident.
