Assam today continued to reel under heat wave, recording the highest temperature of 38.8 degrees celsius, with the death toll rising to six.
Heat wave claimed three lives in Guwahati, two in Cachar and one in Hailakandi districts, official sources said.
According to the forecast by Regional Meterological Centre, the day in the state capital would be comfortably hot though the sky will be partially cloudy in some places.
The maximum temperature would vary between be 38.8 degrees celsius and 36 degree celsius while the relative humidity would be around 63 per cent.
The prevailing situation was expected to continue for the next few days, the sources added.
Guwahati, Silchar and Lakhimpur recorded the highest temperatures of over 38 degrees, surpassing the earlier high of 38.5 degrees celsius recorded in 1979.
Temperature in other parts of the state was also comparatively high with Dibrugarh recording a high of 37.6 degrees celsius, Tezpur 37.7 degrees celsius and in Jorhat it was 37 degrees celsius.
Schools and educational institutions have been closed in most of the severely affected areas, including Kamrup (Metro).
