A new born male elephant calf died at the Sulakuchi Hill Tracks at Jagiroad in Assam's Morigaon district today, forest department sources said.

The calf born two days ago in the elephant corridor between Assam and Meghalaya died of starvation as its mother did not produce milk because of lack of food, the sources said.

The forest department took custody of the carcass for burial.

Elephants have been facing a food crisis in their natural habitats on the Assam-Meghalaya border due to shrinking forest following encroachment by humans, they added.
