BJYM members burnt effigies of Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at various places including Guwahati, Sibsagar, Nalbari, Rangiya and Tinsukia.

"Our agitation was intended to highlight the worsening law and order situation in the state and the government's failure to take any remedial measures," BJYM state president Mriganka Barman said.

He also accused the ruling Congress government of playing politics over the 'secret killings' of 1998-2001, when scores of people, including relatives of ULFA leaders, were killed by unidentified gunmen.

"Last week Gogoi expressed helplessness over bringing to justice the culprits responsible for the such incidents. This shows the pathetic state of the government," Barman said.

The BJYM is planning a series of agitations against the government during the upcoming state assembly session which is scheduled to start from July 16.
