Bru repatriation to begin from mid-February

The proposed repatriation of over 32,800 Brus lodged in six relief camps in Tripura is scheduled to begin from the second week of February, Additional Secretary for Mizoram's Home department Lalbiakzama today said.

Lalbiakzama, who attended a meeting between the Ministry of Home Affairs and Mizoram government in New Delhi, told PTI over phone that the schedule for commencement of the repatriation of the 5,413 Bru families was fixed during the meeting.

The meeting was chaired by Special Secretary (Internal Security), Ministry of Home Affairs Mahesh Kumar Singla.

Lalbiakzama said the Mizoram government would revise the proposal for expenditure to be incurred in the repatriation process and submit the revised estimate to the Centre.
 

Earlier, the identification of bona fide residents of Mizoram was conducted at the six relief camps in Tripura was conducted during November 2 to 23 last year.

The physical repatriation, scheduled to begin from November 30, could not take off due to various reasons like proposal to enhance expenditure on some payments and also because the Centre could not release the required funds due to due to demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.
