A car lifter has been injured in an encounter with police today in Assam's Sonitpur district, police said.
The police chased a group of car lifters with two stolen vehicles, asking them to stop but they opened fire in a bid to escape and an encounter followed in which a driver of a vehicle was injured at Tupia under Jamugurihat police station.
The car lifter has been identified as Shibsankat Tamanag and he received bullet injuries in his leg, Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Sanjukta Parashar said.
The police seized the vehicle but the driver of the other stolen car managed to escape, she added.
A search operation was on to nab the other car lifter.
