The carcass of a Sambar deer with splinter injuries was found in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district today, with the wildlife department suspecting it to be a case of poaching, officials said.
The stag was found dead at Morah Tamhal in Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary this morning and is believed to have been fired at from a 12-bore gun, Wildlife Warden Sunil Singh told PTI.
A postmortem was conducted by a team of experts and the report is awaited. A case has been registered in this regard and a search is on to trace the accused, he said.
"We will not tolerate poaching and appropriate measures will be put in place to avoid any such incident in future," he said.
