Case against assessor for replacing genuine jewllery with fake

: Police today registered a case against the Jewel assessor for Canara bank's branch at Pavattakudi in this district for allegedly replacing genuine gold jewelery with 'gilt jewels" to the tune of Rs two crore.

The fraud came to light when the bank's jewel auditing team found the oranaments fake and jewels worth Rs two crore had been replaced with gilt jewels.

The assessor had escaped with the genuine jewels, police said, adding a hunt was on to nab him.

Acting on a complaint from the bank manager, a case has been registered, they said.
