CBI arrests absconding accused in CPI-M leader's murder

CBI has arrested an absconding accused in connection with alleged murder of Narendra Lahiri, then Councillor of Garulia Municipality of North 24 Parganas in West Bengal, 15 years ago.

CBI sources said accused Babu Mitra alias Nata, who has been on the run since 2001, was arrested from Bandel in Hooghly district and has been produced today in court.

The agency had registered the case in 2003 on the orders of Calcutta High Court which directed it probe alleged murder of Lahiri, the then Branch Secretary of CPI-M and councillor of Garulia Municipality of North 24 Parganas District.

"After completion of investigation, CBI filed supplementary chargesheet on 01.12.2005 in the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Barrackpur (West Bengal) criminal conspiracy and murder under IPC against three persons including said absconding accused,"CBI spokesperson said.
 

Nata was arrested by local police in the year 2001 and released on bail.

"Later, he went absconding and a non-bailable Warrant of arrest was issued against him by the Court. He was declared a Proclaimed Offender by the Court on April 5, 2006 while trial commenced against the other two accused persons. A cash reward of Rs 50,000 was also announced by CBI for any information leading to his arrest," the spokesperson said.
