The deadly New Year's Eve stampede in China's gleaming financial hub has shaken many Chinese who believed such incidents could only happen in countries like India even as all the 36 people killed in the tragedy were identified today.
"I originally thought that stampedes like this could only happen to Indians on pilgrimages," Cheng Daolin, a manager at a Chinese engineering company, wrote on Weibo, China's Twitter-like microblogging site.
Another Weibo user said, "in the space of one night, China has become like India, and Shanghai has become like Mumbai".
