The family members of a 65-year old farmer, also a senior Communist worker, today donated his body to the Coimbatore Medical College for research purpose after he died on June 11 due to some illness.

Rayappan, a resident of Kangeyampalayam near Sulur on the outskirts, died on June 11, due to age related illness, a release from the family said today.

A member of Progressive Youth Front, Rayappan had last year registered his name expressing his willingness to donate his body and accordingly, the body, along with the letter, was handed over to the hospital, the release said.

By donating the body, Rayappan wanted to create awareness among the youth on body and organ donations for the benefit of general public, the release said.

A portion of his house had also been donated to set up a library, they said.
