A police sub-inspector (PSI) was arrested by the Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding bribe from a grocery merchant here to allow him to sell tobacco, police said today.
Amol Vitthalrao Gangalwad (27), a PSI attached with Gadchiroli police station, was yesterday arrested for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 from a city-based grocery shop owner for not taking any action against him for selling tobacco, district Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Roshan Yadav said.
The shop owner lodged a complaint with the ACB officials upon which a trap was laid by them. However, during this trap, the accused got suspicious and fled with the voice recorder which was in possession with the complainant, so as to destroy the evidence, he said.
The cops of ACB conducted a search operation and nabbed the PSI from a place in the city where he was hiding, the DSP said.
A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the IPC, he said, adding the accused has been arrested and further investigation is on.
