CPI(M) condemned the "attack" on its Politburo member Surya Kanta Mishra by Trinamool Congress workers during a bypoll campaign for Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in West Bengal today and also questioned police's role, claiming he was targeted in presence of senior officials.

"The Politburo condemns the attack by workers belonging to Trinamool Congress (TMC) on CPI(M) Politburo member and secretary of West Bengal state committee Surya Kanta Mishra.

"What makes the attack more reprehensible is that it took place in presence of senior police officials," CPI(M) said in a statement.

"This is the latest incident in the continued campaign of violence that Trinamool Congress has unleashed against CPI(M) and the Left Front. The West Bengal committee has called upon all its units in the state to organise protest actions against this heinous attack," the statement said.

Mishra and senior party leader Rabin Deb were allegedly heckled by Trinamool Congress activists while campaigning for party candidate Mandira Panda for Tamluk Lok Sabha bypoll to be held on November 19.

However, East Midnapore Superintendent of Police Alok Rajoria rubbished any "attack" on the CPI(M) leaders.
