US President-elect Donald Trump would meet Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe later today, his first meeting with a foreign leader after winning the presidential elections last week.
"We are very deferential and respectful of the fact that we already have a President of the US, Barack Obama. He's on his last foreign trip of his presidency, and these meetings are much less formal than they will be once Donald Trump is sworn in as President," the Trump Campaign manager Kellyanne Conway told reporters.
This would be Trump's first meeting with a foreign leader after he was voted to power in one of the most surprising results of a US presidential election held on November 8.
Since then the president-elect has spoken to about 30 world leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"We are very sensitive to the fact that President Obama is still in office for the next two months, and we won't be making diplomatic agreements today," Conway said in response to a question.
The meeting, she said, would be closed to the pool press.
"I think we will have access to a still photograph that both teams agree upon and there may be some statement. We need to be respectful to President Obama and to Prime Minister Abe. We haven't negotiated that completely yet," she said.
The meeting is scheduled for later today.
