CPI(M) seeks more powers for JKSAC to fight corruption

Party MLA M Y Tarigami said today that he will move a Private Member's Bill for amending the State Accountability Commission Act, but will prefer the government to take an initiative as such bills "don't get much consideration".
"The High Court has made an observation about corruption in the society. Government should bring an amendment in the Budget Session to provide powers to the Commission to initiate suo motu proceedings in cases of corruption," he said here.
Last month, the state High Court had observed that corruption in public life had, of late, assumed alarming proportions and the commission, established by law to fight the menace, lacked powers for suo motu proceedings in such cases.
"The lawmakers, therefore, are free to confer power on the commission to suo motu order inquiry, investigation or proceeding against a public functionary by making necessary amendment to the act," the court had said in its order.
