DMK today welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's remark hailing Tamil as a language older than Sanskrit and suggested that it be made one of the administrative languages of the Centre.

A day after Modi told students that "Tamil is older than Sanskrit and is beautiful," DMK working president M K Stalin in a tweet welcomed the view.

In a "Pariksha pe Charcha," event, the Prime Minister told students in Delhi that he could however only say 'Vanakkam' (greeting) in Tamil and he regretted that he could not go beyond this.

Referring to it, Stalin said Modi should make Tamil one of the administrative languages of the Centre and declare it as the language of the Madras High Court.

Stalin, who is also the Leader of Opposition, demanded allocation of funds on par with Sanskrit for the growth of Tamil.

He urged Modi to declare "Tirukkural," a masterpiece of saint poet Thiruvalluvar which inculcates moral values, as a national book.
