Doctor held with bribe money in Odisha

The anti-corruption vigilance sleuths today arrested a doctor while he was accepting bribe from a patient for removing a tumour at the district headquarters hospital at Puri.

The arrested doctor has been identified as Dr Arun Kumar Biswal. The vigilance sleuths recovered Rs 1,000 from the doctor before his arrest.

A case under sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 has been registered against the doctor based on the complaint made by one Balartam Palei of Bedhasunder village under Brahmagiri police station in Puri district, a vigilance department officer said.

Palei in his complaint alleged he was admitted to the Puri hospital since July 30 for surgery of a tumour on his right heel.
 

The accused Dr Biswal allegedly demanded Rs 1,000 from him for surgery and said after receipt of the amount, he would fix up a date for surgery.

"During the course of investigation a trap was laid in the chamber of the accused Dr Biswal at DHH, Puri. The doctor received the bribe money of Rs 1,000 from the complainant and was caught him red-handed. The hand wash of the accused gave positive chemical reaction confirming receipt of the money," an official release issued by the vigilance department said.

The bribe amount of Rs 1,000 was recovered from his possession and investigation was on, it added.
