Doctors conduct first corneal transplants in J-K

Doctors working as volunteers with a Sikh sect today conducted the first-ever corneal transplants in Jammu and Kashmir.

"The two corneal transplant surgeries were performed at SKIMS, Bemina here," said Director, eye bank of 'Dera Sacha Sauda', Dr Aditya Insan, who along with doctors from SKIMS performed the surgeries.

A 55-year-old woman with spontaneous failure of cornea and another 35-year-old lady with bilateral Corneal Clouding were operated upon successfully, he said.

He said doctors from SKIMS were also briefed about the latest techniques and methods of conducting corneal transplant surgeries.

It was also agreed upon that in future Dera Sacha Sauda Eye Bank will provide every possible support to the SKIMS doctors, he said.
