The Delhi government today directed Education Officers to inspect the toilet and drinking water facilities in all government schools under their jurisdiction.

A team comprising the Education Officer, two Principals, and Junior Engineers (Civil and Electrical) of Public Work Department, would visit the schools till June 13 and submit a report on the condition of toilet and drinking water facilities there, a statement by the Education department said.

The order was issued by Director of Education department, Padmini Singla at a meeting with the Education Officers today.

The teams are to survey all buildings constructed on or after 1990 and report on its safety condition. They would have to review the status of the civil and electrical repair and maintenance work being carried out in the concerned schools.

The direction comes after Delhi Lt Governor Najeeb Jung's emphasis on the need to improve sanitation, hygiene and upkeep of school buildings, especially toilets at meetings with the Principal Secretary (Education) and Director (Education).

Singla, during her visits, had observed that though infrastructure-wise, government schools met basic requirements and in many cases were far better than other schools, the condition of toilet blocks was a matter of serious concern.
