A loss of over Rs 90 crore was caused to the education sector by the devastating floods in Kashmir and the government is yet to restore the infrastructure in educational institutions even a year after the deluge, officials said.
"The education sector has faced a loss of Rs 90.29 crore and 1096 schools were damaged across Kashmir. While 495 buildings were totally damaged, 601 schools were partially damaged," officials in Education Department said.
Of the total, about 427 buildings of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) primary schools, 48 Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) middle schools and 20 buildings of high and higher secondary schools were fully damaged in the floods.
The partially damaged buildings include 481 SSA primary schools, 49 RMSA middle schools and 71 high and higher secondary schools, the officials said.
South Kashmir saw the maximum impact of the floods in the educational institutions.
"While 182 school buildings in Anantnag were damaged in the floods, Pulwama saw damage to 169 such buildings," the officials said.
They said 174 school buildings were also damaged in Budgam, 122 in Baramulla, 64 in Srinagar and 17 in Ganderbal.
The students in such schools had to be shifted to other private or rented buildings to continue their schooling.
However, the Education Department is yet to start the repair work on the damaged schools.
