Elderly woman falls to death from 5th floor apartment

An elderly woman today died after allegedly falling from the fifth floor of a building in the city's Ballygunge area this morning, police said.

Locals in Ballygunge's Earl Street early today morning heard a loud thud and found Jamini Desai lying in a pool of blood, they said.

The family members of Desai took the semi-conscious woman inside the apartment instead of taking her to the hospital, a Kolkata Police officer said.

After a team from Ballygunge Police Office reached the place, Jamini was taken to a state-run hospital where she was declared "brought dead" by doctors.

"It's quite mysterious how the woman fell down from that height. We are trying to find out the exact reason. We are probing into the mishap," he said.
