A 85-year old woman was killed and another seriously injured, when they were attacked by a wild elephant at a village on the city outskrits early today, Forest department sources said.
The elephant was part of a three-member herd that strayed into the locality last night and Forest Department officials made an attempt to drive them into the jungles.
The victim, Ramathal was hurled to the ground by one of the elephants at Samichettipalayam, some 30 KM from here while it also attacked Thulasiammal (70), they said.

The two were rushed to the government hospital here where Ramathal succumbed to the injuries.
Acting on a complaint by villagers that three elephants were roaming in their area since last night, Forest department officials rushed to the spot and attempted to drive away the pachyderms by bursting crackers.
The elephants moved to different areas, creating panic among the villagers and one of them attacked the women this morning.
Efforts are on to drive back the animals into the forests, department sources said.
