Elephant calf crushes one to death

"The elephant calf had strayed from a herd of elephants that came from Dalma range of hills in neighbouring Jharkhand. Locals chased it when the animal was roaming near Bhururbani village this morning," Anjan Guha, DFO of Kharagpur Forest range said.

Pritho Mandi (23) was crushed to death by the 3-ft-high elephant when it was riled by the locals, he said.

Mandi was declared dead when he was brought to a local hospital in an injured state, officials said.

The elephant calf came from Kesarrekha forest range and was later caught by the forest personnel. It was later transferred to Jhargram mini zoo, forest officials said.

 

Two other villagers also sustained injury by the elephant, forest officials said.
