Depressed by the crash in the market rate of onions, a farmer allegedly committed suicide today by consuming poison at a village in Bagalkot district, police said.

According to police, 55-year-old Tippanna Kotikalla of Bevinamatti village took the extreme step over fear of not being able to pay the bank loan as he had incurred heavy loss after the decrease in the market price of onions.

Tippanna had availed Rs 3 lakh loan from Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society, expecting high crop yield and good rates.

He consumed the poison in the field in front of onion crop itself and collapsed, police said.
