Forest Department officials are taking efforts to provide treatment to an elephant, that sustained bleeding injuries, inflicted by a farmer in Poondi, on the city outskirts, in the early hours of today.
The farmer, who was sleeping in his house, woke up when he heard and noticed the tiles of the roof falling down and the trunk of elephant entering in search of food, police said.
Panic-stricken farmer took a sickle and hit on the trunk repeatedly, after which the animal ran with trumpeting, with bleeding trunk, inviting the attraction of the villagers.
On information, forest department officials, with a medical team rushed and found the elephant lying in a pit. However, elephant was not allowing them to go near it and efforts were to reach it, so that proper treatment can be given, they said.
