A documentary, depicting the effects of infiltration from Bangladesh into Assam, was released here today by Chief Election Commissioner H S Brahma.
The film 'Assam, The Silent Genocide', highlights the impact of infiltration from Bangladesh into Assam, the impact on demography, indigenous populations, including submergence of indigenous Muslims and the measures required to be taken.
Prabajan Virodhi Manch (PVM), forum against infiltration, which organised the event, said in a release that infiltration was taking place owing to "failure" of successive governments in detecting and deporting foreigners.
PVM has been constituted with the objective of mobilising public participation in Assam and the North East in lodging complaints against "foreigners" and illegal encroachment of land by such foreigners by invoking the legal process and divesting such foreigners of citizenship and attendant benefits.
PVM has launched a mass signature campaign seeking to amend the Citizenship Act by making the condition of citizenship by birth to be granted only if both parents are citizens, effective from March 25, 1971 instead of December 3, 2004, for Assam, implement the Assam Accord of 1985 by detecting and deporting foreigners, rather than conferring citizenship on them and clear all government lands, forest lands, grazing lands, reserve forest lands etc. From encroachment by Bangladeshis.
