The bodies of five men, found dead in an irrigation tank at a village in Andhra Pradesh, were transported in three ambulances to Salem in Tamil Nadu today, police said.

They said the ambulances from Vellore arrived at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital in Kadapa, 144 km from here, where the bodies had been kept for autopsy.

After post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to the police team from Tamil Nadu.

Police said that the probe is still on to ascertain the circumstances that led to the death of the five men.

The cause of death, as per the post-mortem report, was asphyxiation due to drowning, they said, adding there were no external injuries.

The bodies of the five men in a decomposed state were found floating in the tank at Vontimitta village, about 120 km from Tirupati on Febuary 18.

Police had also said they were also probing the angle whether the men were part of red sanders smuggling gang.

Yesterday Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami had said that the five men were from Salem and directed police to probe the incident.

He had also announced that Rs three lakh would be given to each of the families of the deceased as 'special relief' from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, considering their weak economic background.
