Five members of a family, including a 13-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, drowned in Sakri river of Aravali district, police said today.

The incident took place on the outskirts of Dugharwada village near Modasa town yesterday, the police said.

The deceased were identfied as Hira Bharwad (50), Ruda Bharwad (25), Kana Bharwad (18), Giga Bharwad (10) and Kanchan Bharwad (13).

The bodies of Hira, Ruda and Kana were fished out yesterday night by local villagers, while bodies of Kanchan and Giga were fished out by the Ahmedabad Fire Brigade today afternoon.

"Kana, Giga and Kanchan went to school crossing the check dam yesterday morning. To help them cross the check dam while returning in the evening, Hira went on the other side and lifted Kanchan and Giga in his arms. He told Kana to hold his shirt and follow him," Aravali DSP Mayur Chavda told PTI.

"While walking on the narrow and slippery wall of the check dam, Kana lost control and fell into the river. Since he was holding the shirt of Hira, he along with the two kids also fell into the water. Seeing them drowning, Ruda, who was watching them, also jumped into the water to save them," Chavda said.

"After hours of searching, locals fished out the bodies of Hira, Ruda and Kana yesterday night, while Ahmedabad Fire Brigade, fished out the two remaining bodies today afternoon," Chavda said.
