Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today directed Additional Director General of Police Umesh Kumar to leave for Kathmandu immediately to look after the arrangements for the safe return of the Assamese people stranded in Nepal following the earthquakes.
It is still not clear, however, how many people from Assam are stranded in Nepal, officials said.
The Chief Minister had asked Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla yesterday to take steps to see if anyone from the state was stranded in Nepal and ensure his/her safe return.
Two police helpline numbers - 9435552203 and 8749860803 - have also been opened for information on earthquake victims from the state with IGP Special Branch Hiren Nath as the nodal officer, a statement said.
The state government has also opened a toll free number 1070 for the same purpose.
Meanwhile, after yesterday's earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, two mild tremors shook Assam today, though there was no immediate report of any casualty or damage to property.
The first tremor, which lasted a second, was felt at around 1242 hrs and the second was felt after a few seconds in almost all districts of the state, officials said.
The quakes shook buildings, rattled windows in houses and swayed electric poles.
Today's quake was measured 6.9 on the Richter Scale in Nepal at a depth of 10 km with epicentre at Latitude 27.6 degree North and Longitude 85.9 degree East, Met office here said.
