HC dismisses proposal for driving training school

Dismissing a petition proposal of the Madurai district administration to establish a Traffic Park for driving training school on the western bund of the city's one of the largest Vandiyur lake.

Hearing a PIL filed by Walkers' Club against establishment of the training school, a Division Bench consisting Justices R Sudhakar and V M Velumani said it would never allow encroachment in water bodies.

The judges observed that the existence of Walkers' Club on the bund had actually prevented encroachment of the waterbody to a great extent.

They directed the Public Works Department to take steps to desilt the waterbody and increase its water holding capacity and remove the encroachments in the lake.
