Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court today stayed the bail granted by a lower court to seven persons allegedly involved in the murder of 'Pottu' Suresh, a DMK functionary and close aide of former Union Minister M K Alagiri.

Justice K B K Vasuki posted the case for hearing on April 16.

The Principal District and Sessions Judge had granted them conditional bail on April 8.

Challenging the lower court order, a police Inspector said bail was granted without considering the fact that the probe was in the preliminary stage.

The court had erroneously come to the conclusion that there was no specific overt act against the accused, the inspector submitted.

The accused were involved in many heinous crimes and granting of bail would cause law and order problem besides they could tamper with the investigation and threaten witnesses, the inspector added.

Prime accused including 'Attack' Pandi and Praveen were absconding and if they were released they would help the main accused, it was submitted.

Suresh was apparently killed over an intra-party feud on January 31 this year.
