An imposter, possessing a genuine MHA identity card, and throwing his weight around on its basis after being "impressed" by Hollywood blockbuster 'Catch me if you can', has been arrested by Delhi Police.
The accused has been identified as Anurag Gahlot and used to pose as a DANICS 2008 batch officer working as Assistant Commissioner of Sales Tax.
The matter came to the police's notice on June 9 when Gahlot got involved in an argument with a shopkeeper at Bindapur. Later, the two mutually sorted out the issue.
However, police grew suspicious when the accused introduced himself as a top official and flashed an identity card of the Ministry of Home affairs.
"Civil list of DANICS was examined and his name was not found. Enquiry from sales D-VAT section, enforcement directorate was done and they also denied of anyone by this name and identity working there," police said.
Yesterday, he was thoroughly interrogated as to how he got hold of a genuine MHA card without being an officer, as it had serious security implications.
"As per his version, he managed to obtain the MHA card by forging the signatures and stamp of director level officer of GNCT Delhi. He stated that he initially got an ID card for the post of SDM and then subsequently created a fake transfer order and got a renewed MHA I card of Asstt Commissioner," a police officer said.
His claim of having an M Phil from JNU was also found to be false, police said.
"It has also come to notice that he has married a girl working in government sector on the basis of creating a false identity and the divorce matter is pending in court on this issue," the officer said.
Later, he confessed that he was not a DANICS officer and had appeared in Civil services exam earlier but could get through. "He was impressed by the movie 'Catch me if you can' and was thus following it."
A case of cheating by impersonation and forgery has been registered against him at Bindapur police station of South West District.
