commercial activities were largely affected due to the shutdown.
"Over one crore employees and workers belonging to organised and unorganised sectors are taking part in the two-day-long strike, affecting banking, insurance, postal and other commercial activities," Trade Union Joint Front spokesman Pushan Bhattacharya said.
The bandh affected work in public sector units like BHEL, BSNL, insurance companies and all nationalised banks, he said.
Cash transactions of Rs 300 crore in banking sector was stuck due to the strike, a spokesman of Indore United Forum said.
Around 700 employees in 42 post offices, including the GPO, at Indore struck work. People from unorganised sector, including transport, mandi and anganwadi, in MP were also supporting the bandh.
In neighbouring Chhattishgarh, almost all nationalised banks, post offices and commercial establishments were closed down.
According to Shakeel Shajib of the SBI Officers' Union, financial transactions to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore were disrupted across the state.
The shutdown evoked a good response at Durg, Bilaspur, Raipur, Rajnandgaon and Jagdalpur districts. Elsewhere in the Naxal state, it had a little impact with transport and other services functioning normally.
In Goa, the situation remained normal even as industries were partially hit and nationalised banks remained closed as a part of the strike.
Over 2,000 workers took out a march on the streets of Panaji in support of the Central Trade Unions' various demands. Schools and other establishments, including markets, in the main cities remained open.
